How the wood diaphragm calculator works

This free wood diaphragm calculator checks roof and floor diaphragms sheathed with OSB or plywood by the AWC Special Design Provisions for Wind and Seismic (SDPWS 2021), the edition referenced by the 2021 IBC and the Florida Building Code, 8th Edition (2023). Choose the panel grade, thickness and nail size, whether the diaphragm is blocked, the nail spacing and the framing, then enter the span between shear walls, the depth between chords and the wind or seismic load. The calculator checks the unit shear, finds the chord forces and the reaction to each shear wall, and shows where lighter nailing is enough.

What it checks

Method

The diaphragm is treated as a flexible, simply supported deep beam spanning between two shear wall lines. The sheathing acts as the web and resists shear, and the boundary members (usually the double top plates) act as the flanges and resist the moment as a tension and compression couple. The unit shear is greatest at the shear walls and drops to zero at midspan, which is why nailing can be relaxed toward the middle. Wind and seismic loads are entered at strength level, and the calculator applies 0.6W and 0.7E for ASD.

Assumptions and limitations

Frequently asked questions

What is a blocked diaphragm?

In a blocked diaphragm every panel edge is supported and nailed to framing, using blocking between the joists or rafters at the edges that do not land on a framing member. Blocking roughly doubles the capacity compared with an unblocked diaphragm and allows closer nail spacing.

How do I find the diaphragm chord force?

Treat the diaphragm as a simple beam: the moment is wL²/8, and the chords at the two edges resist it as a couple, so the chord force is wL²/(8W), where W is the distance between chords. Double top plates usually act as the chords, and their splices must carry this force.

What are diaphragm nailing zones?

Unit shear is largest at the shear walls and zero at midspan. Designers often use close nailing near the walls and a lighter schedule, or unblocked panels, in the middle. The calculator gives the distance from each support beyond which each lighter option is adequate.

What does the load case mean for an unblocked diaphragm?

SDPWS Figure 4A shows six panel layouts relative to the load direction. Case 1, with no continuous panel joints parallel to the load, has the higher unblocked capacity; Cases 2 to 6 have lower values.
