How the concrete column calculator works

This free concrete column calculator checks a rectangular, tied reinforced concrete column under combined axial load and bending using ACI 318-19. Enter the section width and depth, concrete strength f'c, steel yield strength fy, the number and size of longitudinal bars, cover, and the factored loads Pu and Mu. Press Solve to draw the P-M interaction diagram and see whether the load point falls inside the design envelope.

What it calculates

Method

For each trial neutral-axis depth c, strain varies linearly from 0.003 at the extreme compression fiber. Bar stresses are εsEs (Es = 29,000 ksi) limited to ±fy, and β1 follows ACI 318-19 Table 22.2.2.4.3. Summing the concrete and steel forces and their moments about the section centroid gives one point on the curve; repeating this for many values of c traces the full diagram. Bars are spaced around the perimeter from the total bar count, with bar centers at the cover plus 0.5 in.

The D/C ratio is measured along a straight line from the origin through the load point (Mu, Pu), which keeps the eccentricity e = Mu/Pu constant: it is the distance to the load point divided by the distance to the design curve.

Assumptions and limitations

Frequently asked questions

What is a P-M interaction diagram?

An interaction diagram plots every combination of axial load P and bending moment M that a column section can resist. Load points inside the design (φ) curve are acceptable, and points outside it are overstressed.

Why does the strength reduction factor φ change along the curve?

ACI 318-19 Table 21.2.2 ties φ to the net tensile strain in the extreme tension steel. Compression-controlled sections use 0.65 for tied columns, tension-controlled sections use 0.90, and φ varies linearly in the transition zone between them.

How is the D/C ratio calculated?

The calculator draws a line from the origin through your load point and finds where it crosses the design curve. The D/C ratio is the distance to the load point divided by the distance to that crossing, so a value of 1.0 or less means the column has enough capacity at that eccentricity.

Does the calculator design ties or check slenderness?

No. It checks the cross-section strength only. Size the ties and check slenderness separately, and use magnified moments for slender columns.
